I recently took the teaching perspective inventory, as was recommended through my current online course. You get the opportunity to respond to questions based on a scale of strongly agree to strongly disagree about your beliefs, actions and intentions in your role as a teacher. One thing I found a bit of a struggle when taking the test was the need to think about only one set of learners and one way I teach. I decided to go with face to face and leadership volunteers in a workshop setting. However, as I went through I'm pretty sure I responded differently at times based on thinking of other groups of learners and settings.
The results were interesting, but the video on how this tool can be used as a conversation about your teaching was well worth the watch.
So although I have now taken the test, the real work comes from reviewing the results and looking at how my scores sometimes contradict each other. For example, my intentions are high in nurturing category but my actions are more than a 4 point difference. Why is this? Well for the content and training structure currently in place it is hard to actually teach with a nurturing perspective despite my beliefs and intentions in this area.
Another aha moment came from looking at the Apprenticeship category, which is actually my most dominant based on this teaching scenario. First of all, I wouldn't have thought of it as apprenticeship until I went and read all the paragraphs about the 5 perspectives, then I could see exactly why this area came out as dominant.
So how do I become more at ease and actually embrace my perspectives as a teacher? Further reflection on this should help me on one of my upcoming assignments as well.
Being a more novice teacher, I'd like to retake this test in a year or so and see if the results are similar or different.
What a great free tool to have at our fingertips, go on and try it!
