What stops us from learning is usually ourselves. In Brookfield's A Skillful Teacher he talks about the resistance to learning that some students face. I like his word of warning about trying to win over the select few that don't want to be there as you might obsess over this and actually lose the attention of those that are there to listen, participate and learn.
He also suggest we try and put ourselves in the learners shoes and think about a course or workshop we have taken where we had that feeling of resistance to learning. Why did we? What helped us overcome it? or What actually pushed us further from it?
One thing I've always claimed I couldn't do is draw. Let's be honest, a lot of us claim we can't do that, like others claim they can't public speak... however I can, I just choose to believe I can't.
